Alberni Valley Museum

The Alberni Valley Museum works in consultation with the community to collect, document, preserve and present all aspects of the cultural heritage of the Alberni Valley and West Coast of Vancouver Island. Heritage resources held in the public trust are made fully accessible to increase public understanding and appreciation of the region's distinct cultural heritage.

The Museum's beginnings were with the Alberni District Historical Society. Now we're municipally owned and operated, with a Museum and Heritage Commission which advises on policy and objectives as well as fulfilling a broader community role of advocacy, coordination and advice.

We share our facility with the Historical Society who manage the community's archives and we work in partnership with the Industrial Heritage Society and the Maritime Heritage Society to collect and present collections in each of their interest areas. The Museum has a professional staff of four, who also work on collections and interpretation for the McLean Mill National Historic Site.

The Lighthouse

The Port Alberni Maritime Discovery Centre (The Lighthouse) and The Hutcheson Gallery are owned and operation by the Port Alberni Maritime Heritage {non-profit} Society.

The society conceived and developed the Discovery Centre in association with the Alberni Valley Museum and the Port Alberni Port Authority. Construction was completed in 2001 and The Hutcheson Gallery came four years later.

Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Societ (PAMHS) was formed in 1989 with the purpose of working with the museum and the community to preserve and present the maritime heritage of the west coast area. It has developed and hosted temporary exhibits, mounted public information panels, coordinated many special events, and restored the Bamfield Lifeboat. Each summer season a new exhibit portraying a maritime theme is presented, along with special events and activities for the public.
